Doug Reinhart, age 10, of Evansville, Ind., for his question:

WHERE IS THE GREAT DIVIDE?

The Great Divide is the highland in North America that separates the waters flowing into the Pacific Ocean from those flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. The area is sometimes also called the continental divide.

In Canada and the United States, it crosses Alberta, British Columbia, Montana,.Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. It then continues to run through Mexico and Central America.

In Canada, the Great Divide joins the Height of Land, which separates Pacific and Arctic drainage on the east.  In South America, it is not called the Great Divide but simply the continental divide. Here it follows the western portion of the Andes Mountains.
