What are the duties of a quartermaster?

There are quartermasters in the army and quartermasters in the navy. The types of duty are different for each. The army quarter¬master is a commissioned officer, among whose duties it is to provide billets, or quarters for the soldiers. He is also in charge of the provision of clothes and uniforms.

The navy quartermaster is a petty officer whose duties may sometimes call him to help in steering the ship. He may take charge of the binnacle, the box where the compass and its light are kept. He is also in charge of the important job of studying signals.
