Welcome to You Ask Andy

Paula Rast, age 11 of Seattle, Washington, for her question:

Is the Gila monster the only poisonous lizard?

So far as we knows this sturdy two foot fellow with the fat tail is the only member of the lizard clan able to deal a poisonous bite. The gala monsters named for the Gila Rivers can be seen sunbathing his brown and black pebbly hide in parts of Utah Nevada and Arizona, He is also found further south in Mexico and way down into South America,

The gila monster cannot inject poison through fangs, as a snake does.  It oozes from ducts into his mouth and some of it may creep into the wound made by his bite. There is some doubt that a healthy person can be killed by the bite of a gila monster   but Andy suggests that you leave him strictly alone, just in case.
