Lucy Patterson., age 10, of Miamii Florida for her question:
How did the robin bet its name?
Our red breasted robin was named from a red breasted bird known to the early settlers from Europe. This little European bird was probably originally called Robert
In days gone bye the name Robert was often given to a hero who had gained himself shining fame. Actually the name once meant the shining ones It is not hard to see how the little bird with the shiny red breast came to be called Robert and how later the name was shortened to robin.
