Gary Salliere, age 10, of Millbrae, California, for his question:
How does a fish get his food
If you watch a fish, you will notice that he is taking in water through his mouth all the time. He sends this water back through his gills where he takes out its oxygen for breathing. Solid bits of food which flow in with the water he swallows as food. The biggest whales take in tons of seawater and sift out from it the tiniest of plants and sea creatures called plankton.
Fish can also bite and nibble food, Maybe you have watched a fish chewing daintily at a leaf of seaweeds. Some fish swallow smaller fish whole. Some make a grab with their toothy haws and take a bite at a time.
