Welcome to You Ask Andy

Polly Stephenson, of Dallas, Texas, for her question:

When did the Liberty Bell crack?

In 1752 a great bell, ordered by the people.  of Philadelphia, arrived from London. To the disappointment of everyone the bell proved brittle and cracked while being tested in September. of the same year. The bell was recast, but cracked again during a testing in 1753.

The metal was then melted down and for every pound of metal one and one half ounces of American copper were added in hopes that the new bell would be less brittle. This seemed to be so, for the great bell pealed through the City of Philadelphia to mark important event until the year 1835,

In that year it cracked again as its deep tones marked the funeral procession of Chief Justice John Marshall of the U, S, Supreme Court. Anyone who visits Independence Hall can see the crack made by the bell’s own clapper. Anyone can walk around the 12 feet of its base and anyone can touch the great Liberty Bell, which stands for so much in our country's history.
