Welcome to You Ask Andy

Jackson Berier, age 12, of Kernersville,

Jackson is truing to raise three baby flying squirrels who lost their mother  Baby squirrels are born in a cozy nest high in a leafy tree  Like all toddlers, the youngsters get curious and want to explore  Sometimes a little fellow tumbles out of the nest and lands on the ground, You may want to take the little darling home with you as a pet, Whether he is an orphan or has merely lost his homes the squirrel child oars will be the same and he will grow up to be a darling pet, though somewhat frisky,

If the baby squirrels are very young, with eyes half closed then their first diet will be milk mixed with water and fed through a medicine dropper Use four tablespoons of water to every 12 tablespoons of milk and serve the formula slightly warm, Later they will tape whole milk, though do not give it to them refrigerator cold,

As the furry darlings get a little bigger, they will enjoy a few spoonfuls of pablum or other soft baby food  Soon their lovely eyes will be open, big and bright, and they will romp and play, Chances are, they will begin to return your loving care with affection, Try them on solid food  If they are ready, they will nibble it up in proper squirrel fashion,

Give them a small bite or two of crisp lettuce and a few crumbs of cooked hamburger  Later they chew carrots and other sturdy raw vegetables  They are now ready for nuts, which they eat with great enjoyment  You may also add a chopped, hard cooked egg to the diet from time to time,

This diet should take care of a family of growing squirrels, but it is slightly different from the leaf buds, nuts, fruit and birder eggs they get in the wild, And certainly cowls milk is not the same as mother squirrel s milk, For this reason it is a good idea to add a few vitamins to their foods right from the beginning  Andy gets a mixture of powdered vitamins at the pet store for his Siamese eat, Rams

A little of this mixture should make the baby squirrels' diet complete

The squirrel nest is a rough and tumble bundle of sticks and leaves  However, Mama is there to keep the darlings warm with her soft furry coat and the nest is sometimes roofed with leaves to keep out the rain, Tie home you make for your little pets should also be warm and dry, An old carton or one of those baskets you buy for a dog or eat should do very wall,

Find a soft cushion or pad for the floor and cover it with soft rags that can be taken out often to keep the nest clean  The furry little fellows will tend to sleep by day and play around at night, For they era night animals by nature  For this reason it is a good idea to give the little sweethearts their main meal dust before you go to bed

If they are comfortable they will soon adopt you as their foster parent, They will recognize you and want to play with you  Soon they will be exploring their room and than the house, Since they love to climb trees and glide through the air„ it may be time to let them explore outdoors  Chances area they will return once in a while for you to cuddle them and stroke their silken coats
