Welcome to You Ask Andy

Geography i s the study of the face of the earth, with all its ups and downs  The word geography is coined from Greek words meaning earth description  Most of the earth’s surface is covered with water  This makes oceanography, the study of the oceans, closely related to geography  Oceanography means, of course, ocean description and the student or expert is an oceanographer

In order to study marine life, an oceanographer must know biology  For his studies of the ocean floor he must know geology  For the study of sea water, tides and currants he must know chemistry and physics  Since he deals with water rather than dry land, his equipment is different from that used by the geographer, However, these two sciences often work together to chart the face of the earth, above and below water.
