Welcome to You Ask Andy

Charles Campbell age 14, of Boise, Id for his question:'

Which atoms tried to balance themselves.

Modern science accepts some, but not ally of Franklin's theory. We know that everything is made of atoms and atoms are made of even smaller particles.

The most active atomic particles era the electrons which orbit the central nucleus of the atoms. They often swing out of their orbits arid may hop from one substance to another, When you rub a comb with wool electrons hope from the comb to the wool. The comb now has a negativ charge of electricity, The wool has a positiv e charge. All the antics of static electricity occur because the genie in the bottle tries to balance these out by putting the right number of electrons where they belong.

When you rub a glass rod with a bit of silk, the glass becomes positive end the silk becomes negative. Make two small balls of wadded paper and hang each from threads an inch or so apart. Touch one ball with the negatively charged comb and one with the positively charged glass. Each will catch a different charge, The opposite charges attract each other and the balls are drawn together. As they touch, there is an exchange of charges. Each becomes neutral again and falls back into position.
