Arthur Young, aged 12, of Toronto, Canada for his question:
How was the sun formed?
A mayfly lives his whole life in a few hours. Suppose this mayfly wanted to study trees. He would not have time to watch a single leaf unfold. So he could not learn much about the life history of a tree. A star has a life span of billions of years. Mankind has not had time to watch the history of a star unfold.
Astronomers know a lot about the stars, They know most about our own star ‑ the glorious sun. They know it is billions of years old and will burn brightly for billions of years to come. But they are not certain gust how it was formed.
A11 the stars we see belong to a great system called the Galaxy. Some say the Galaxy may have started as a vast mass of whirling gases. Blobs of gas may have cooled and collected like drops of water from steam. Only these drops of water were blazing stars.
This is just a theory of how the sun was formed. A theory may be a good idea. But until it is proved to be true we cannot adopt it as fact. The truth is, we do not know for sure how our golden sun came to be.
