Welcome to You Ask Andy

Willow Carter, aged 9, of Tuscon, Arizona for her question:

Is Palomino a color or breed of horse?

The Arabian horse may be a purebred for 2000 years. For the handsome steeds carved in ancient Greece are enough like him to be his direct ancestors. Every thoroughbred horse ‑can trace his pedigree with papers right back to the days of Charles II of England, But not so the Palomino.

This proud beauty is generally of mixed ancestory. Some of his ancestors may have been Arab horses, some hardy Spanish horses. There may also be American Saddle Horses and Tennessee Walking Horses in his family tree, For the Palomino need not be a purebred horse. He is a horse bred for color, he Is a Palomino if his coat is golden blond and his mane and tail are platinum blond.

Unlike many purebred horses, the Palomino can do a good stint of service able work. And he is a great showman. You couldn't miss admiring him out there in the parade. Purebred or not, he is certainly one of the most beautiful creatures on four feet! And he knows it.
