Where was the city of Troy?
The glamorous story of ancient Troy was told by Greek and Roman poets. The proud city, they said, stood at the foot of snow‑capped. Mount Ids. For ten years its lofty walls withstood the attacking Greek heroes, The great story was told and retold through the centuries. But there was no trace of the ruined city. Or there seemed none until about 94 years ago.
Than a German archeologist was digging the sites of ancient cities. He was interested in a pile of rubbish near the Aegean Sea. The debris was piled 100 feet deep in a long mound. Heinrieh Schliemann began to dig. What he found proved beyond doubt that he had unearthed the site of ancient Troy.
From the spot he could look up and see the snowy top of Mount Ids. Turning around h$ could face the narrow strait of the Dardanelles leading into the Aegean Sea. What’s more, as the digging went on, the spot proved to have been the site of more than one ancient city, Nine levels showed that nine different peoples had built and lived there. The deepest level was a walled encampment of some 5,000 years ago.
One of these ancient cities had massive walls 16 feet thick. This is thought to be the ruins of the ancient city of Homer s great story. These are the ruined walls that kept the Greek armies at bay for ten long years.
