John Perlin, age 11, of Los Angeles, for his question:
How far out is space?
Sky space is very much in the news. This sky space is empty, even of air. The earths blanket of atmosphere peters out, about 600 miles above our heads.
How far space stretches, nobody knows. The stars are separated by billions and trillions of miles of apace, Beyond the Galaxy which is the system of stars in our sky, are other galaxies. These distant star systems are separated by vast reaches of space.
New telescopes show more and more space, dotted here and there with galaxies. Where does it end?. How far does it go? Nobody knows, But suppose somebody did tell us where space ended. We would then ask, What is beyond the outside limit? Our minds cannot grasp the vastness of space, Nor can they imagine an end to it all.
