Jeff Kirkvolds age 7. of Sioux Falls, for his question:
Where is the deepest part of the ocean?
In certain places there are deep holes in the ocean floor called trenches, They tend to be near strings of islands that loop out into deep water. Many of these islands are volcanic. There are trenches in the ocean floor off the Aleutians. There are trenches off the East Indies, the West Indies and off Cape Horn.
The deepest ocean trenches known are in the western part of the pacifioj The Tuscarora Trench off eastern Japan is over six miles deep. The deepest so far discovered is east of the Philippines, It is the Mindanao Trencho six and a half miles deep. The bottom of this pit is six and a half miles below the surface of the sea. It could swallow Mount Everest and swamp its proud crest under a mile of water.
