Welcome to You Ask Andy

Sylvia J. Larson, age 12 of Victoria,

Is a human an animal?

Some people will try to tell you that a human being is an animal. Andy says, don't believe a word of it, Don’t even believe it when you see a person acting like a pig, a donkey or a tiger. It is true that our bodies have much in common with the animals, We need to eat, breathe, exercise and live in the world of nature, But there are far more important differences that set humans apart from the animals

Human beings have minds, whether they use them sensibly or not, They can figure out problems and make plans, Animals are somewhat aware of what goes on around them. Human beings are aware and can also figure out reason and causes.

Most important, mankind has an inner, spiritual life. He can create and appreciate beauty. He can control his emotions, And he alone, of all the creatures, has a need to seek and find religion and the knowledge of right and wrong. No matter how badly he behaves, he is never an animal. For he can always improve himself.
