Why are highways crooked?
Andy thought that this question came from somebody in a great hurry. Slow down Carroll. Next time you ride the highways, try to figure out the reason for each of the curves and bends. See, that one went around a. rocky butted This one cuts between two hills. Now you are driving up a tall mountain. Could the car take the grade if the road ran straight up? No, so the road weaves and threads around the mountain to make a safe and gentle grade'.
Some of the super‑duper highways do cut straight as a ruler across the country. Hills are chewed away and hollows built up to make way for them. They are wide and smooth and neat looking. They are also handy for the people in a great hurry. But Andy likes the roads that bob and weave along the old trails or follow the shoulders of the lazy rivers. Its a slower way to travel, but more interesting.
