Are there really mountains under the Atlantic?
The Atlantic Ocean covers a chain of mountains 10,000 miles long and twice as wide as the Andes. They form a spine running down the middle of the North and South Atlantic Oceans. These undersea mountains were discovered about 100 years ago and are still being charted,, They have been named the Atlantic Ridge:
Their peaks rise from 5 to l0 miles above the floor of the deep ocean bed. Most of them are a mile or so below the tolling waves of the stormy Atlantic.
In a few places, still higher peaks poke their noses above the surface of the water. The Azores Islands are really the tops of some of the Atlantic Ridge mountains. There are several other Ridge islands in the Atlantic. Near the equator, a few sharp peaks poke up to form the tiny Rocks of St. Paul.
