Lamer Carter, age 10, of Magee, Mich. for the question:
Where does the umbrella bird live?
He is a native of the New World and his home is the tropical forests of South America. There he dwells with a host of his gaudy relatives. Together these birds are known as the cotingas. The umbrella bird is the only cotinga who does not go in for gaudy plumage. He is black as a crow and about the size of a crow. His claim to fame is the feathery umbrella which he carries on his head.
The umbrella is really a large crest. When he opens it up to its full size, it covers his head and hangs down over his bill. He looks for all the world as though he is sitting under a rather shaggy black umbrella. The unusual fellow also wears a long black bib which hangs down loosely from his throat. It too is made of black feathers.
