What happens to the cricket when summer is over?
The cheerful cricket cannot survive the cold winter months. Once in a while ono of thorn will sneak indoors and hide near the hearth. Hero ho can outlast the winter. His relatives out in the meadows become foggy with the cool days of fall and perish with the first frost.
But meantime Mrs. Cricket has taken care of the next generation. She uses her sharp tail to poke little holes in the ground. And into these holes she places her small white eggs. The eggs sleep safely through the winter.
Come spring they hatch and. the baby crickets struggle out into the air. They are tiny copies of their parents except they have no wings. They eat whatever greenery is around and soon they are big enough to molt. These young crickets are culled insect nymphs and. the nymphs molt several times before they become winged adults.
