Lee Whitby, age 10, of Peoria, I11., for his question:
Where is the bellbird found?
The bellbird is a relative of the fascinating umbrella bird who hopped into Andy's column last week. The cousins, both cotinga birds, live in the tropical forests of South America. The umbrella bird, with his plumage parasol, must be seen to be appreciated. Not so the ballbird, His clear, bell‑like voice can be heard a mile away. Sometimes he joins in a chorous with a group of relatives. Their lively music is the most noticeable thing in the bungle.
Mr. Bellbird is about as big as a crow. His soft plumage is snowy white, His wattles are black and, when he sings, he shakes them from side to side. Mrs. Bellbird is slightly smaller and tinted with green so that she is not so noticeable whoa sitting on her nest.
