Do fish ever sleep?
No fish ever finds a bed, closes his eyes and goes to sleep. You will never catch your pot goldfish napping. Even in the; dead of night ha is swimming ground his watery home. He may slow down or even rest for a while. But he never sleeps.
For one thing, a fish cannot close his eyes. For another, he has to keep moving so that water will circulate through his gills. In the deep ocean it would be disastrous for the fish to sleep at night. For night is a time for hunting. Schools of mackarel and herring swim faster at night to dodge their enemies.
The ocean‑going mammals, however, do sloop either at night or in the daytime. These are the seals, dolphins and porpoises. At least some of the whales sleep. Sometimes a ship bumps into a big whale, dozing as he floats on the surface.
