Dennis Kasa, age 11, of Falls City, Neb., for his question:
What is an ocean current?
An ocean current has boon described as a river within the sea. It is a wide stream of water flowing in a definite direction through the turbulent waters of the ocean. It is started by the prevailing winds and forced to change course by the shape of the continents.
Most of the ocean currents swing around in vast eddies. The Gulf Stream is a huge eddy within the North Atlantic. It flaws westward, dust north of the equator, blown by trade winds. The land masses of the Americas forces it to turn north. Off Newfoundland it turns east, recrosses the Atlantic, turns south and. sweeps along the shores of Europe and Africa. Inside this vast eddy is the calm Sargasso Sea. Similar currents exist in the South Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans,
