Welcome to You Ask Andy

Pamela Monachino, age 11, of Parma Heights,  for her ques  on:

Do the Great Lakes ever flood?

Once in a while the waters of the Mississippi and his tributaries swell up and flood over their banks. Not so the Great Lakes. The huge: river system is fed by countless surface streams. The Great Lakes are fed by ground water far below the surface.

The streams and the ground water both are fed by rains and molting snow. The streams run off the surface water. The ground water seeps in to be stored in a deep underground reservoir. The level of the ground water is far below the surface and it varies a little with wet and dry seasons,

The floors of the Grout Lakes are deep enough to dig into the ground . water. Surplus avatar drains out through the St. Lawrence River into the sea. This keeps them from flooding over their shores. However, the level of the lakes door vary with the level of the ground water. It may vary from two to two and one half feet. It rises after a long wet season and sinks after a long drought.
