Welcome to You Ask Andy

Russell Bultmans age 10, of Indianapolis Indiana, for s question:

Is the falcon a native American bird?

There about 60 members of the bird family Falconides. The sparrow hawk alias the American kestrel, is a true falcon found throughout the New World. It is a handsome bird with blue‑grey wings and russet 'back. The prairie falcon is also an American. He lives in the prairies and deserts. He is sandy colored and feeds mostly on prairie dogs and jackrabbits.

Every falcon depends upon speed to catch his dinner. He is a bird of prey and, if he is to eat, he must be faster than his victim. So we are not surprised to learn that one of the falcons is the fastest of all birds. When diving for prey, we are told, this fellow can reach 180 miles an hour. He is known as a peregrine and better known. in America as the duck hawk. Not only are falcons native to America but the fastest of them all chooses to make his home here.
