Welcome to You Ask Andy

Anthony DiRose, age 11, of Rochester New York, for his question:

The tiger swallowtail is one of the most handsome of butterflies. His large wings swoop back in a graceful swallowtail. They are mostly soft yellow, deeply bordered with black. The black border is studded with a row of blues yellow and red buttons. Mrs. Tiger Swallowtail is sometimes more black than yellow.

A good time to trap this handsome fellow is when he is in the larva or caterpillar stage. Search among the leaves of wild cherry trees. The larva is a chubby green fellow. He has a black and a yellow stripe across his shoulders.

When you take him provide him with fresh cherry tree leaves. Place a little soil in the bottom of his jar. For the swallowtail butterflies, or most of theme pupate in the ground.

In times your chubby green caterpillar will become a handsome winged insect, just like his parents. Few caterpillars resemble their winged parents in their color scheme. This is because the hungry little fellows have to live on leaves. Their colors match their backgrounds as closely as possible.
