Nary Foss, age 8, of Coulee am, ash., for his question:
Where does a wombat live?
The wombat is one of the amazing animals of Australian He makes his home in the southeastern region of, the island continent from Queensland to New South Wales. He is also found in Tasmania and on Flanders Island. The people of Australia call the furry fellow a badger because he is such an industrious digger.
As a rule the wombat digs a burrow 15 to 25 feet long, But sometimes he gets carried away and goes on digging until he has made a burrow 100 feet long. There is always a comfortable nest at the end of the burrow.
The wombat is a gentle fellow. As a pet he is affectionate and smart. He looks like a big, sleepy, short‑eared bunny with strong digging claws on his front feet. A big wombat may be four feet long and weigh 80 pounds. The good natured animal is a strict vegetarian, very fond of hay.
Of course the wombat is a marsupial. Junior is always an only child. He is in a great hurry to get born. Then he is so small and helpless that he has to spend a long time developing while he hides in mama’s pouch.
