Jim Thomas, age 12, of Caldwell, for his question:
What are the anteater's enemies?
Almost any animal who eats ants as a steady diet may be called an anteater. But the true, toothless anteaters are all natives of the New World. They are found in the warm regions of Central and South America.
The silky two‑toed anteater is only 15 inches long. He is a tree dweller who ranges from Mexico to Bolivia. This little fellow has poor eye sight and is rather deaf. He often falls prey to tree snakes and tree climbing cats.
The three‑toed anteater may be over two feet in length. He, too, is a tree dweller and often falls victim to the big cats. The giant anteater is as big as a small boar. And he stays on the ground. This one is a powerful fellows well able to defend himself with his strong arms and claws. Not even the big cats dare attack him. The giant anteater is gentle by nature lout when wounded he has been known to kill a boy. His only serious enemy is man.
