Richard Lamb, age 14, of Vista, California, for his question:
Which is the biggest suspension bridge?
Some time ago there was talk of a monster bridge being built over the Mackinac Straits in Michigan. Our Andy was so sure that this Big Mac would be larger than his San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Crate had held the record for the World's Largest Suspension Bridge since 1937, the year of its completion.
In 1957, Big Mac of Michigan was completed and the facts were on record. Its span is 3,800 feet. The Golden Gate is still the champ with a span of 11,200 feet. But Big Mac replaces the George Washington Bridge in second place. The beautiful George Washington over the Hudson has a span of 3,500 feet. Fourth place goes to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge of Washington State. And fifth place is claimed by San Francisco's Transbay Bridge. The nine largest spans are in the U.S. The tenth is in Quebec, Canada.
