Welcome to You Ask Andy

Ronald Louis, age 11, of Albany, New York, for his question:

Where is the piranha found?

This small butcher is a fish. He has the reputation of being the most dangerous fish alive and has certainly killed more human beings than any other fish. Yet the little monster is only about ten inches long. He is equipped with powerful jaws and two rows of triangular shaped teeth. When the jaws are closed these vicious daggers fit into one another. A fishhook is snapped in two with one bite.

Various varieties of piranha live in the river waters of South America. They are found in the Amazon and certain rivers that drain into it. No one dares to go bathing in the Orinoco, the Paraguay, the Parena or the Sao Francisco rivers for fear of meeting a school of these bloodthirsty little killers. The countries in which they live are Brazil, Venezuela, Paraguay, Argentina and the Guineas. A school of vicious piranha can strip the flesh from a 400 pound animal in less than ten minutes.
