Welcome to You Ask Andy

Marnette Cynowski, age 11, of PJfilwaukee, Wis., .for her question:

What kind of plant is the sea anemone?

A group of sea anemones looks like an underwater flower garden. But actually, this is fur from the truth. Those lovely sea dwellers belong to the class Unthozoa which means plant animals or, more accurately, plant‑like animals. Yes, these pretty little daisies are animals and not plants at all.

There are about1,000 varieties of sea anemone, ranging in size from smallish buttons to lilies of the valley. Each stands on a sturdy stoll, which is actually the body. The top of the stem resembles a daisy. These petals, however, are really a rosette of tentacles. The heart of the daisy is a round mouth, leading to this stomach which is inside they stem.

The sea anemone stands waiting for the sea to bring it food. Bits of plant life, small sea animals and little. fishes drift by. The tentacles grab a morsel of this or that, curve around it am stuff the food into the sea anemone's hungry mouth.
