Welcome to You Ask Andy

Delbert Godfrey, age 8, of Peterborough, Ont., for his question:

Where is the home of the quagga?

Sad to say, the quagga now has no home at all. The last one of them perished in the year 1872. This fellow had lived out his lonely life in the London zoo. The poor quagga is one of the several animals to become extinct in the past few hundred years.

At one time, great herds of these animals roamed the vast and sunny plains of Cape Colony, South Africa. They were zebras, pretty little wi. cousins of the noble horse. Actually the cute little trotters were about the size of large donkeys.

Being zebras, we would expect the quaggas to have been striped. And so they were. However, unlike the gayly colored zebras, they were not striped from head to hooves. The quagga’s coat was mostly buff or pale tan in color. He wore stripes only on his head and neck. And the stripes were a very deep dark chocolate color.
