Welcome to You Ask Andy

Carol Bradley, ale 12, of St. Catharines, Ont., for her question:

Does an elephant really have a good memory?

There is a rumor that Jumbo tends to bear a grudge. Some people say the big follow never forgets an unkindness. He may not see his tormentor for years. But, when he does, he remembers and gets even ‑ so the rumor says. But, says Andy, this rumor is untrue. Jumbo is a kindly animal and not at all likely to carry a grudge.

As for his memory, he is a very intelligent animal. Some say he is as smart as a dog, a horse or even an ape. And, like any intelligent creature, he remembers what he learns. What’s more, he remembers his keeper. And, since he is also a very affectionate animal, he remembers him with kindness.

Jumbo is far more apt to remember a kindness than he is to carry drudge. For, when he is tamed, he considers that man is his dearest friend. Usually he includes all human beings, especially children, among his friends.
