Welcome to You Ask Andy

Bert Nelson, Jr., age 15, of Boise, Idaho, for his question:

How often does a spider build her web?

Maybe you have walked outdoors on a dewy morning. Dew does hang on each blade of grass and put tears on the faces of the pansies. But where did all these spider webs comp from? They were there all the time. The dew drops merely made them more noticeable, threading them with pearly jewels and turning them into necklaces and bracelets.

Each dew drop is a heavy land on the fine silken threads, causing them to break. Poor Mrs. Spider, all her hard work was done for nothing. Not at all, she says. I was going to build a new web this morning anyway.

In fact, the busy lady builds a new web almost every day of her life. For cobwebs are so fragile that almost anything, can tear them. Every fly caught in the web rips the delicate threads. Passing birds and animals tear it and even a breeze may rip it. Mrs. Spider is used to all this wrecking. So, as a rule, she builds a new web each morning. And the work entailed is equal to the work you would do in building a large dog kennel.
