Catherine Davin age 12, of Rochester, New York, for her question:
Where do the Eskimos Live?
The Eskimos roam all over the frozen far reaching territories of the frozen north. In some places they live as far south as the latitudes of Scotland though they do not live anywhere in the British Isles. Nor do they live in Iceland, that small Atlantic island of fire and ice.
Eskimoland streches across Alaska, Canada and Labrador. It includes Greenland. In the Old World it covers the northern reaches of Siberian and it includes the cold unfriendly islands between Siberia and Alaska. In all this vast expanse of land there are only about 40,000 Eskimos, living conditions are so hard that all this territory is needed to support the people.
No one has disputed their rights to the frozen top of the world, for so far no one has wanted to share their hardships. The tough climate, however, does not bother the Eskimos at all. They seen prefer the long cold dark winters to the short warm summers. They have the reputation of being the most cheerful people on earth ‑ which should not really surprise us. For do not they live in Santaland?
