Andrew Dalton, age 14, of Esquimalt, B.C., for his question:
What is a toucan?
The toucan is an American tropical bird where he has the reputation of being the noisiest chatterbox in the treetops. He is usually smaller than a crow and his sleek plumage is almost always adorned with patches of brilliant colors. You may not notice this at first glance because he has one remarkable feature which takes your entire attention. It is his bill,
The toucan's bill is at least half as big as his body and looks like a banana stuck on the front of his face. If it worn made of heavy material, he could not hold up his head. However, it is very light.
The toucan turns his head around and lays his bill along his back when he sleeps, after he has flipped over his tail feathers to cover it up. Apparently he is very proud of his remarkable bill and does not want anything to happen to it while he is asleep.
