Welcome to You Ask Andy

Russell Vandeweerd, age 9 of Schaller, Iowa, for his question:

Where does the wind go after it stops blowing?

Wind is air moving from one place to another. In some ways air is like water, always restless and ready to flow. Flowing water makes a river. Flowing air makes the wind.

Flowing water must obey certain rules. When there is nothing to stop it, it must always flow down hill, .Also, it must keep level on the surface. When you take a cup of water out of a pailful, the surrounding water flows in to fill up the hole.

Flowing air also must obey rules. When a mass of air becomes thin and light, heavier air flows in and fills it up. Wind is air flowing in to even things up in a mass of light air, It dies down when the heavy air and the light air are evenly balanced.
