How did Georgia get its name?

Georgia takes it name from King George II of England who granted its charter as a colony. This was way back in 1732 and General James Oglethorpe was given permission to found a settlement there. The General wasted no time and the next year saw him sailing up the river to found a colony at Savannah. There were only 150 settlers in this first group, but General Oglethorne was soon back with more. As time went on. Georgia became a refuge for persecuted Protestants from Europe.

The name of Georgia may go back to English royalty who soon thereafter lost their foothold in America, but the state motto of Georgia belongs to all that is noble in the past, the present and the future. It is Wisdom, Justice and Moderation; proud words indeed to remember.
