Camille Phillipp, age 8, of Spring Valley, California, for the question:
Why is the sea cooler than the land?
During the hot summer the sea is cooler than the land and we take a dip to forget the heat. During the winter, the sea tends to be warmer than the land. We do not take a dip to warm ourselves because there is not that much difference in the temperatures. Also, coming out of the warmish water, the cooler air tends to give us colds.
The land tends to heat up faster than the sea and it also cools faster. In the summer time, the land gets hotter than the sea. But when winter comas, it soon loses its heat. The sea heats up slowly, very slowly. But when winter comes it still holds onto some of the heat it gained during the sunny days of summer and is then warmer than the land.
