Karrell Spidle, age 10, of Lancaster, Penna., for the question:
What is Esperanto?
Once in a while, some thoughtful person decides that all the different languages 3.n the world lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Such a person was Dr. Zamenhof, of Russia. He put together an artificial language which, he hoped, people of all nations would learn and thus come to better understanding of each other. He announced has new language in 1887 and he called it Esperanto, a word which is coined from an old Latin word meaning hope.
Esperanto is drawn from the chief languages spoken in Europe. The spelling is phonetic, which means each letter or group of letters has one sound and only one sound. So far, the good doctor’s hopes have not been fulfilled, for very few people have learned his international language. Instead, about 100 other artificial international languages have been invented.
