Welcome to You Ask Andy

Myron Kaplan, age 13, of Philadelphia, Penna.., for his question:

Does the sun ever move?

The sun rotates on its axis, just as the earth does. This means that we get first one view then another of its glorious face. The sun of course is much, much bigger than the earth. It is, in fact, big enough to swallow our little world a million times over and still have room to spare. We cannot expect the big fellow to make a complete; turn in 24 hours, as the little earth does, Actually, the sun makes one complete turn in 24 earth days.

In addition to this, the sun is moving in a gigantic circle through the Galaxy, the vast cartwheel system of stars which is our home in the heavens. The earth, the moon and the entire Solar System move with the sun around the Galaxy. The sun and its family are moving on this amazing journey at the staggering speed of 170 miles a second.
