What is the Atlantic Ridge?
The Atlantic Ridge is a range of mountains under the sea. It begins in the ocean near Iceland and swoops down between the Old World and the New. Keeping to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it parallels the bumps of the two coastlines way down to South Africa. There it bends around the Cape of Good Hope and reaches around to the Indian Ocean,
This vast range of underwater mountains is about 10000 miles long and twice as wide as the huge Andes. It stands on the deep floor of the Atlantic and its crests are between 5,000 and 10,000 feet highs Even soy most of its peaks are a mile under water,
A few crests of the Atlantic Ridge poke above the water to form islands. The Azores are islands formed by such peaks, So are the little Rocks of Saint Paul near the equator. Ascension Island is a volcano resting upon the Atlantic Ridge*
