Welcome to You Ask Andy

Dennis Wilson, age 11, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, for his questions

What is the latest meteor that ever hit the earth?

When a meteor hits the earth it immediately becomes a meteorite, Most of them fall in outlandish places and are never found. What's more, they have been crashing down since the earth began. Very big meteorites are few and far between, though countless little meteorites collide with the earth every day,

The largest meteorite we know about buried itself in the earth so far down that we have never found it. The huge hole it left is Meteor Crater in Arizona.

Another large meteorite fell and rests in Southwestern Africa, It is estimated to weigh somewhat more than 50 tons. A large meteorite which fell in Greenland was taken to New York by Admiral Peary. We know for a fact that this fellow weighs 362 tons. So, though we know of larger meteorites and suspect that many monsters are buried in various places, this one is the largest in captivity so to spook. It is on exhibit in the Natural History Museum, New York City.
