Jane Young age 10, of Slingerlands, New York, for her question:
Do worms have eyes?
Worms do not have eyes as we know theme However, little Mr, Pinky is not entirely blind, He is one of the very rare creatures who can see without eyes, though not very well.
In the worm's skin, all over his body there are special cells which are sensitive to light. They know when a strong light falls upon them and they flash this message to the worm's nervous system. Mr. Pinky never feels safe in the bright light. After all, he has no way to defend himself and the world is full of robins and other hungry fellows always on the lookout for a worm dinner.
During the day, the worm very sensibly stays below ground in his burrow. He comes out only after dark or in the dim light before dawn. That is the time to catch him. But., if you shim a bright flashlight on him, his sensitive cells will relay the message to his nervous system and back he will crawl into his burrow
