Ernest Turnar, age 11, of Hobart., InD., .or his question:
How were the Great Lakes formed?
The Great Lakes are; a gift of the Ice Ages. Thousands of years ago, this part of the continent was under glaciers two and three miles thick. These mountains of ice bit down into the ground, gouging out huge holes which became the basins of the Great Lakes:
These basins are so deep that they reach down to the ground water, the huge reservoir of rain and melted snow below the surface. They are kept constantly filled from this ground water. As their waters drain away through the St. Lawrence river to the sea, more water seeps in from their floors and walls.
