Brian Hanks, age 10! of Los Angeles, California, for his question:
What is the northernmost point of Alaska?
Andy says there is no better way to welcome our new state than to ask polite questions about it. Usually, the more you know about something, the better you like it. In this case, Andy's young friends are certainly giving a warm, friendly greeting to Alaska. For they are curious about everything in the new state.
The northernmost point of Alaska is Point Barrow. It is a pock of bleak, rocky shoreline which juts out into the chilly Arctic Ocean. Three whale rib bones are stuck in the ground to mark the spot which is, of course, the northernmost point of continental America. This tundra area may be bleak and cold but it has its rewards. Not so long ago, Navy surveyors discovered petroleum, natural gas and coal there.
