Patsy Rapalee, age 129 of Powhatan, Virginia, for her question:
Where do pistachio nuts brow?
The pistachio tree grows in certain places in the Middle East and in southern Europe. It is a smallish tree bearing leaves, each of which is formed from three to five leaflets. Its flowers are round and greenish brown in color. In time, of course, the flowers fade to develop into fruit.
The fruit forms in double rows along either side of a stem. Each is encased in a two‑part shell. Inside is the nut meat, a pale green kernel, Under proper conditions, these nuts will grow into new pistachio trees.
We do not see many pistachio nuts around. They are not as common as the familiar walnuts, cashews, almonds and brazil nuts. We meet the pistachio most frequently as ? flavoring. It has a delicate flavor all its own, and its color is a lovely pale green.
