Welcome to You Ask Andy

Cathy Popp, age 11, of Vancouver, British Columbia, for her question:

What is the Midnight Sun?

North of the Arctic Circle, there are times when the sun does not set at night, It travels around. the sky in a big circle. This happens in the summertime when one summer day can last weeks or months. The people who live in these northerly regions can go outdoors in the middle of the night and see the midnight sun.

Further south, the summer days are longer than the nights. At the equator, day and night are equal all year round. South of the equator, the people have short winter days and long nights, while we are having our summer. Within the Antarctic Circle, the sun does not rise at all. This region will have a midnight sun while the Arctic Circle is having its long winter night.
