Where did the word geyser come from?

Hot water springs abound in Iceland, People use their hot water for washing$ cooking and even for heating their houses. Certain of these hot springs were named in the dim past with a word that seemed to suggest their behavior. Those that gushed up in spurts were called gysirs. Our word gust as in a gust of wind had the same beginnings,

The geysers in our Yellowstone National Park were discovered not so long ago, It seemed natural to name them from the old and well known geysers of Iceland, We spell the word geyser and pronounce it a little differently from the old Icelandic word. Old Faithful is the most famous of our geysers though not the largest. The first syllable of the word rimes with tie. You may pronounce the whole word either gyser or gyzer, but be sure to spell it geyser,
