Welcome to You Ask Andy

Gay Dona Cope, age 7, of Nampa. Ida:

Is a wolverine like a wolf?

These two fierce, wild animals are not related. The wolverine looks rather like a big badger or a smallish bear. People of the north woods named him a wolverine because his cruel habits reminded them of the wolf. Actually he is a much worse character than the wolf. He attacks almost any animal and fights to the kill. He is cunning enough to raid traps and camps. These habits make him unpopular with both humans and animals, What's more, he gives off a foul smell which is hated by everyone in the forest,

Andy says, lets try to find one good point for this most unpopular animal. He has an amazing fur coat. In color it is dark brown with a pale streak along each side. It is not very soft or silky. But his coat never freezes like the wet fur coats of other animals. The wolverine can be wet, yet his coat will not freeze in icicles even in weather way below zero.

The Eskimos make use of Mr. Wolverine's special non‑freezing coat. They use strips of it to edge their hoods and sleeves. They may perspire or get their cuffs wet, Even in the most bitter weather, their edging of wolverine fur will not clog and freeze solid. And that is the only good thing that Andy can say about the wolverine. He is the bad‑boy of the weasel family cousin to the otter, the marten, the skunk and the mink,. But even his family hates to own him.
