Welcome to You Ask Andy

Lee Sroufe, age 12 of Garden City Kansas

Should you pick a rabbit a by the ears?

Everyone who has a pet rabbit has wondered about this. Those long soft ears look like such handy handles that it seems most natural to use them to lift up the furry fellow. But surely you would not like to be picked up by the ears. Imagine how that would hurts Well it also hurts Mr. Bunny; No matter how handy those big floppy ears look, they are made of soft gristle and0kin and not strong enough to support his whole weight without a great deal of pain. Notice how he shrinks and tries to kick when you pull his ears hard enough to lift him.

The proper way to lift Mr. Bunny is from underneath. Get your forearm securely below his back legs. That way he can sit or squat on a firm foundation as he sits or squats on the ground. Use your other hand to hold the back of his neck, He is not likely to hop off when once you have him in your arms. But he might fall if you joggle him as you walk along,

Your furry pet soon, gets used to this comfortable way of handling him. He cannot tell you about this. But Andy assures you that he is most grateful. for it and would say thank you if he could.
